God is our heritage
[Joshua 13:15-33]
Today's text introduces the land that Moses distributed to Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh on the east side of the Jordan River. And no inheritance was given to the tribe of Levi, because God is their inheritance.
Sihon, king of the Amorites, Og, king of Bashan, the Midianite nobles, and Balaam, the sorcerer, were all judged by God (21,22,27,30) because they opposed God and put God's people in trouble. The Israelites who judged them and came to live in Canaan must take a different path from them. If Israel behaves like them, they will be judged like them. We must turn away from the ungodliness of the last days, which includes self-love, love of money, and love of pleasure rather than God (2 Tim. 3:1-5).
Instead of giving the land to the tribe of Levi as an inheritance, God personally promises to make it their inheritance (32,33). The tribe of Levi can be said to have a weaker foundation in life than anyone else. However, the tribe of Levi ‘appears to have nothing, yet has everything’ (2 Corinthians 6:10). Since we have been guaranteed God, the best inheritance that will never change, what better blessing can there be than that? In addition, they were given the role of showing the rest of the tribes that God was the greatest possession and gift by living with God as their inheritance without owning the land. God is our greatest reward (Genesis 15:1).Compared to the Lord, everything in this world is nothing more than dung (Philippians 3:8). God gave himself to us through a covenant, so let us rejoice in his word and enjoy God in the covenant. And let us show the world the blessings of a life that is satisfied with God.
God, help us live a holy and pure life of faith according to Your will, which is our eternal inheritance!
