Amaziah's Pride
2 Kings 14:1-16
Amaziah, who became the king of Southern Judah, follows a similar path to his father Joash. Although they followed God's path, they did not remove the high places of idols. He eliminated the group that killed his father, but according to the law of Moses, their children were spared. After winning the war against Edom, Amaziah became arrogant and fought against King Jehoash of Northern Israel, but was defeated. King Jehoash of Northern Israel took the people of Judah, including King Amaziah of Southern Judah, captive, tore down part of the walls of Jerusalem, and plundered the temple and palace treasures before returning.
We must follow God's word, not personal feelings or customs (5-6). Amaziah was not consumed by resentment toward his father's enemies, but only executed traitors according to the law. Even though you know the teachings of the Bible, don’t you act according to your feelings and customs? You can make the best decisions when you place your emotions and customs under the Word of God.
We must be thankful and humble for the grace God has given us. Although he won the war against Edom by God's grace, King Amaziah became arrogant, thinking that he had won the war with his own strength. Pride is boasting about yourself, and humility is boasting about God.
God, help us to be content in You and obey Your Word as we boast in Your grace.
하나님, 우리가 당신의 은혜를 자랑하며 당신 안에서 만족하고 당신의 말씀에 순종할 수 있게 도와주세요.
