From healing to forgiveness

From healing to forgiveness

Luke 5:12-26

* Jesus stretched out his hand and touched the leper and cured him (12-13).

* Jesus restored the social status of the cured leper by showing his body to the priest and offering a gift as a testimony to the people that he had been cleansed, as Moses commanded (14)

* Jesus touches a leper who was forbidden by the Jewish people to even approach him as unclean (13,14). And He comforts not only the physical pain, but also the emotional pain of having to separate from family and neighbors. What we must do as followers of Jesus' teachings is not to hate and exclude, but to give space and embrace.

* Many people gathered after hearing the news of Jesus' healing, but Jesus withdrew to a secluded place and prayed (15,16).

* Jesus, who has both the authority to forgive sins and the ability to cure diseases (17-26).

* The faith of the friends who did not give up and brought their friends to Jesus (17-20).

* Jesus is not a famous and powerful preacher, but the ‘Son of God’ who came to save sinners (16-24). So, he rejects the people who come to him hoping only to be healed, and proudly reveals his mission in front of the religious leaders who come to spy on him. Like Jesus, let us do what is in accordance with God's will rather than meeting people's expectations.

God, help us remember that it is not our right to hate and condemn people! Let us do things that are in accordance with God’s will rather than meeting people’s expectations.
