Fishermen Catching People

[누가복음 Luke's Gospel 5:1~11]

예수님은 하나님 나라의 기초가 될 제자들을 부르십니다. 그들은 유대 사회의 유력한 인물이 아니라, 자신이 죄인이니 줄 아는 평범하고 겸손한 사람들이었습니다. Jesus calls disciples who will become the foundation of the kingdom of God. They were not powerful figures in Jewish society, but ordinary, humble people who knew that they were sinners.

 

많은 무리가 예수님을 따랐지만, 그들은 아직 하나님 나라의 경계에 선 관망자들이었습니다. 예수님은 하나님 나라에 온전히 헌신할 제자를 따로 부르십니다. 예수님의 첫 제자들은 게넷사렛 호수(갈릴리 호수)에서 고기를 잡던 어부들입니다. 예수님은 밤새 허탕을 친 시몬 베드로의 배에 올라 “깊은 데로 가서 그물을 던지라”고 말씀하십니다. 뱃사람의 전문지식을 주장하지 않고 말씀대로 순종한 시몬 베드로는 그물이 찢어질 정도로 많은 물고기를 잡습니다.

Many people followed Jesus, but they were still onlookers on the border of God's kingdom. Jesus separately calls disciples who will fully devote themselves to the kingdom of God. Jesus' first disciples were fishermen who fished in the Lake of Gennesaret (Lake of Galilee). Jesus gets into Simon Peter's boat, which has been struggling all night, and says, "Go out into the deep and cast your net." Simon Peter, who did not claim the expertise of a sailor but obeyed God's words, caught so many fish that his nets began to tear.

놀라운 이적을 경험한 시몬 베드로의 첫 반응은 두려움에 떨며 엎으려 ‘죄인인 자신을 떠나 주시라’는 요청입니다. 거기에는 시몬 베드로의 동료인 야고보와 요한 형제도 있었습니다. 예수님은 시몬 베드로를 제자로 부르시며 “이제부터 사람을 낚을 것이라”고 말씀하십니다. 그들은 모든 것을 버려둔 채 예수님을 따라나섭니다.

Simon Peter's first reaction after experiencing an amazing miracle was to tremble with fear and turn down his face, requesting, 'Please leave me, I am a sinner.' Simon Peter's companions, brothers James and John, were also there. Jesus calls Simon Peter as a disciple and says, “From now on you will be fishing for people.” They leave everything and follow Jesus.

 

예수님은 유식한 학자나 경건한 종교인이 아니라 평범한 어부 시몬을 제자로 부르십니다(8~10). 자기 지식을 고집하지 않고 말씀에 순종하는 겸손한 모습, 예수님 앞에서 죄인인 자신을 돌아보는 가난한 마음을 보신 것입니다. 세상은 유능한 지도자를 찾지만, 하나님 나라(교회)에는 가난한 마음으로 사람을 섬길 줄 아는 제자들이 필요합니다.

Jesus calls Simon, an ordinary fisherman, to be his disciple, not a knowledgeable scholar or a devout religious person (8-10). He saw the humble appearance of obedience to the Word without insisting on one's own knowledge, and the poor heart that looked back on oneself as a sinner before Jesus. The world is looking for capable leaders, but the kingdom of God (church) needs disciples who know how to serve people with poor hearts.

 

베드로는 만선(滿船)의 기적을 통해 예수님에 대한 인식과 자기 인식에 있어 대전환점을 맞이합니다(5,8절). 그는 예수님의 말씀에 순종한 결과 두 배(boat)를 가득 채울 만큼의 많은 고기를 거둡니다. 그러나 더욱 큰 획득은 예수님을 가르침과 병 고침에 탁월한 ‘선생’ 정도로 생각하다가 자연까지 주관하시는 ‘주님’으로 받아들인 인식의 변화입니다. 예수님에 대한 새로운 인식은 자연스레 그분의 거룩하심 앞에서 자신이 죄인임을 자각하는 자기 인식의 변화로 이어집니다. 예수님을 인격적으로 만나면 예수님을 주님으로 인정하지 않을 수 없고 예수님 앞에 내가 부정하다는 것을 깨달을 수밖에 없습니다.

Peter reaches a major turning point in his awareness of Jesus and his self-awareness through the miracle of the ship being full (verses 5, 8). As a result of his obedience to Jesus' words, he harvests enough fish to fill two boats. However, an even greater gain is the change in perception from thinking of Jesus as a ‘teacher’ who was excellent at teaching and healing the sick to accepting him as the ‘Lord’ who even controls nature.A new awareness of Jesus naturally leads to a change in self-awareness, realizing that one is a sinner before His holiness. When I meet Jesus personally, I cannot help but acknowledge Him as Lord and realize that I am unclean before Him.

 

베드로는 “이제 후로는 네가 사람을 취하리라”는 예수님의 말씀 앞에서 ‘모든 것을 버려두고’ 그분을 따르는 길을 선택합니다(10,11절). 지금 자신에게 말씀하고 계신 분이 ‘주님’이라는 사실을 인식했기 때문입니다. 제자는 형편을 고려하여 순종 여부를 결정하지 않습니다. 어떠한 형편에서든지 예수님 한 분만으로 자족하는 일체의 비결을 배우며, 그 자족의 능력에 힘입어 순종의 자리로 담대히 나아갑니다. 또한 제자는 순종의 동기를 성공에 두지 않습니다. 성공과 멀어지는 길이라도 주님이 명하셨다면, 오직 ‘주님의 말씀’이기에 순전한 마음으로 그 길로 걸어갑니다.

In the face of Jesus’ words, “From now on you will be catching men,” Peter chooses to ‘leave everything’ and follow Him (verses 10, 11). This is because they recognized that the person speaking to them now is ‘the Lord.’ A disciple does not decide whether to obey or not based on circumstances. No matter what the circumstances, we learn the secret of being self-sufficient in Jesus alone, and thanks to the power of that self-sufficiency, we boldly move to a place of obedience. Also, disciples do not base their motivation for obedience on success. Even if the path is far from success, if the Lord has commanded us, we walk that path with a pure heart because it is only ‘the word of the Lord.’

 

하나님, 저희가 삶의 우선순위를 재조정하여 예수님을 온전히 따르는 참 제자로 살아가게 하소서! 저희가 겸손히 회개하고 순종하며 모든 것을 버리고 예수님을 따라도록 도와 주소서!

God, help us readjust our priorities in life and live as true disciples who completely follow Jesus! Help us humbly repent, obey, leave everything and follow Jesus!
