Overcome Evil with Good

 

Romans 12:9-21

 

Paul exhorts the saved saints in Rome to love their brothers with unfeigned and sincere love, and to be kind and respectful to each other first. And be diligent, do not be lazy, be zealous, serve the Lord, rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be persistent in prayer, provide for the needs of the saints, and do your best to entertain guests. And bless those who persecute you and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. It says to be of one mind with one another, do not set your mind on high things, but stay low, and do not pretend to be wise.

Do not repay evil for evil to anyone, but plan what is good in the sight of all people and, if possible, be at peace with all people. And Paul tells the Roman church saints that you do not take revenge yourself, but entrust the wrath to them. Rather, if the enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. So Paul exhorts us not to be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil with good.

 

God is the one who avenges our enemies(17-21). Therefore, we must not avenge ourselves and leave ourselves to wrath. On the contrary, we must bless and not curse those who persecute us. If the enemy is hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink. So, do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

 

As saved saints, we must first love our brothers and sisters with sincere and unfeigned love and respect each other (9~18). And you must be diligent and not lazy, but be zealous and serve the Lord. We must rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be diligent in prayer, provide for the needs of the saints, and strive to treat guests. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep, be of one mind with one another, do not set your heart high, but stay low. Do not repay evil for evil to anyone, but plan what is good in the sight of all people. So if you can, you should be in harmony with everyone.

 

God, let us overcome evil with good, trusting in You who avenge us! And let us remember the love of the Lord and let us love each other true!
