David flees into the wilderness and David's followers

David flees into the wilderness and David's followers

2 Samuel 15:13-23

When the messenger reported to King David that the people had turned to Absalom, David left the palace in Jerusalem, leaving ten concubines behind. Ittai, a Gentile from Gath, said that he would follow David to the end. They cross the Kidron brook and go into the wilderness of Judea.

God made David pay for his sins. Through the process of taking Uriah's wife Bathsheba and paying for the sin that caused Uriah to die in battle, we must live a life of fighting to the point of bloodshed for our sins. And we must strive to meet the Lord again in the wilderness and to recover.

David flees to avoid war with his son Absalom. Our selection criteria must prioritize the peace of the community over our own interests.

It is a mistake that David left only 10 concubines. The more difficult it is, the more we need a heart to care for the weak.

Ittai is a Gentile, but he follows David to the end. It is similar to how Ruth, a Gentile, followed Naomi. We must become true disciples who follow the Lord to the end.

God, let us fear You, who judges sin, and turn away from sin and meet You in the wilderness! Help me to prioritize the peace of the community over my interests! And help us to take care of the weak and help me to become a true disciple who follows You to the end!
