Husband and wife united by love and obedience
Ephesians 5:21-33
The Apostle Paul explains to the Ephesian church members what a married couple should observe by comparing them to the relationship between Christ and the church. First, Paul exhort the wife to submit to her husband as she would to the Lord. This is because the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church. So, just as the church obeys Christ, so the wife is to obey her husband in everything.
And husbands are told to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for it. What Christ has done is to wash the church with water and purify it with the word, so that she may be holy and without blemish in her beautiful appearance. In the same way, a husband must love his wife as his own body.
Therefore, the mystery of a man leaving his father and mother and being united to his wife, and the two becoming one flesh, is great. Therefore, husbands are exhorted to love their wives as their own bodies, and wives to respect their husbands.
A wife should do to her husband as she would to the Lord. For as Christ is the head of the church, so the husband is the head of the wife (22, 23).
Husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for it.(25)
God, just as Christ and the church became of one heart through love and obedience, may a wife and husband become of one heart through obedience and love with a heart of mutual respect and build a beautiful family and community!
