Overcome evil with good!
1 Samuel 24:1-22
King Saul goes to David at En-gedi with 3,000 men to capture David again. King Saul went into a cave and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the inner recesses of the cave. Those who were with David said that it was an opportunity that God had given us to kill him, but David said that he could not kill the king whom God had anointed. David arose and cut off the edge of Saul's robe secretly.And then David informs King Saul about this, asking God to judge Saul and himself, and protests that he has no malice. King Saul calls David his son, acknowledges that David is better than himself, and makes a covenant of peace with David.
God is the one who judges right and wrong between people. David left the judgment of right and wrong between King Saul and himself to God and said he would not avenge himself. Let's leave it to God, hoping that God will judge and avenge us even if we have something unfair.
Evil is overcome not by greater evils but by goodness. Saul acknowledged David’s goodness and turned back. People are changed more by one sincere act than a thousand words and harsh punishment.
Lord, give us faith that is strong enough for us forgive our neighbours and help us to treat them with kindness.
