왕의 총애를 받는 하만은 모르드개 뿐 아니라 온 나라 안에 있는 모든 유다인을 죽이려 합니다. Haman, who was favored by the king, planned to kill not only Mordecai but also all the Jews in the kingdom. 왕에게 전권을 위임받은 하만은 왕의 이름으로 아달월(유대력 12월) 십삼일에 모든 유다인을 죽이라는 조서를 작성합니다. Haman, who was given full authority by the king, wrote a decree in the king's name to kill all Jews on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar (the twelfth month in the Jewish calendar). 하만은 은화 일만 달란트의 사비를 들여서라도 이 일을 꼭 이루려 합니다. Haman is determined to accomplish this task even if it costs him ten thousand talents of silver. 그가 작성한 조서(詔書) 내용이 유다인들에게 알려지자, 모두 근심에 싸입니다. When the contents of the decree he wrote became known to the Jews, they were all worried.
□말씀과 나눔 Words and Sharing
1. 모르드개가 굵은 베옷을 입고 대궐 문 앞에 있다는 소식을 왕비 에스더가 듣습니다(1~9절).
1. Queen Esther hears that Mordecai is at the king's gate, dressed in sackcloth (verses 1-9).
1) 왕의 명령과 조서가 각 지방에 도착하자, 유다인들은 어떤 행동을 합니까(3절)?
1) When the king's command and decree arrived in each province, what did the Jews do (verse 3)?
3 왕의 명령과 조서가 각 지방에 이르매 유다인이 크게 애통하여 금식하며 울며 부르짖고 굵은 베 옷을 입고 재에 누운 자가 무수하더라
3 When the king's command and his decree came to every province, there was great mourning among the Jews. Many were fasting, weeping and wailing, and many were lying in sackcloth and ashes.
왕의 명령과 조서가 각 지방에 이르매 많은 유다인이 크게 애통하여 금식하며 울며 부르짖고 굵은 베 옷을 입고 재에 누웠습니다.
When the king's command and decree arrived in every province, many of the Jews mourned greatly. They fasted, wept, cried out, put on sackcloth and lay in ashes.
2) 모르드개가 에스더에게 알려 준 것은 무엇입니까(7~8절)?
2) What did Mordecai tell Esther (verses 7-8)?
7 모르드개가 자기가 당한 모든 일과 하만이 유다인을 멸하려고 왕의 금고에 바치기로 한 은의 정확한 액수를 하닥에게 말하고
8 또 유다인을 진멸하라고 수산 궁에서 내린 조서 초본을 하닥에게 주어 에스더에게 보여 알게 하고 또 그에게 부탁하여 왕에게 나아가서 그 앞에서 자기 민족을 위하여 간절히 구하라 하니
7 Then Mordecai told Hathach all that had happened to him and the exact amount of silver that Haman had agreed to bring into the king's treasury to destroy the Jews. 8 He also gave Hathach a copy of the decree that had been issued in Susa the citadel to destroy the Jews. He told Hathach to show it to Esther and to ask her to go to the king and make an earnest plea before him for her people.
모르드개가 내시 하닥을 통하여 에스더에게 자기가 당한 모든 일과 하만이 유다인을 멸하려고 왕의 금고에 바치기로 한 은의 정확한 액수를 말하고 또 유다인을 진멸하라고 수산 궁에서 내린 조서 초본을 하닥에게 주어 에스더에게 보여 알게 하고 또 그녀에게 부탁하여 왕에게 나아가서 그 앞에서 자기 민족을 위하여 간절히 구하라 하였습니다.
Mordecai told Esther through Hathach, her eunuch all that had happened to him and the exact amount of silver that Haman had agreed to bring into the king's treasuries to destroy the Jews. He also gave Hathach a copy of the decree that had been issued in Susa the royal palace to destroy the Jews. He told Esther to go to the king and make an earnest plea before him for her people.
<나눔 1> 에스더는 유다인들에게 일어나는 일을 알지 못했습니다. 모르드개와 유다인들이 베옷을 입고 애통하는 이유를 자세히 알지 못한 채, 옷을 보내 달래려 했습니다.
<Sharing 1> Esther did not know what was happening to the Jews. She did not know the details of why Mordecai and the Jews were wearing sackcloth and mourning, so she tried to appease them by sending them clothes.
타인의 위기와 고통을 대수롭지 않게 여긴 적이 있다면 나눠봅시다. If you have ever taken someone else's crisis or suffering for granted, share it.
파키스탄과 인도, 미얀마, 우크라이나 등 전쟁과 핍박, 가난과 질병 등 여러 많은 이야기들을 들음으로 인하여 강건너 불 구경하듯이 타인의 위기와 고통을 대수롭게 여기는 경향이 있었습니다. Having heard so many stories of war, persecution, poverty, and disease in Pakistan, India, Myanmar, Ukraine, and elsewhere, I tended to take other people's crises and suffering lightly, as if I were watching a fire across the river.
2. 모르드개는 에스더가 동족을 위하여 왕께 간구하기를 바랍니다(10~17절)? 2. Mordecai wants Esther to plead to the king for her people (verses 10-17)?
1) 에스더가 왕을 찾아가기를 두려워한 이유는 무엇입니까(11절)?
1) Why was Esther afraid to go to the king (verse 11)?
11 왕의 신하들과 왕의 각 지방 백성이 다 알거니와 남녀를 막론하고 부름을 받지 아니하고 안뜰에 들어가서 왕에게 나가면 오직 죽이는 법이요 왕이 그 자에게 금 규를 내밀어야 살 것이라 이제 내가 부름을 입어 왕에게 나가지 못한 지가 이미 삼십 일이라 하라 하니라
11 The king's officials and the people of the king's provinces all know that whoever goes to the king's inner court without being called shall be put to death except that the king shall hold out the golden scepter to that person, and he shall live. And now, thirty days have passed since I was called to the king, and I have not gone in to him."
왕의 부름을 받지 아니하고 안뜰에 들어가서 왕에게 나가면 오직 죽이는 법이요 왕이 그 자에게 금 규를 내밀어야 살 수 있기 때문입니다. 에스더는 이제 부름을 입어 왕에게 나가지 못한 지가 이미 삼십 일이기 때문이라고 합니다.
For if anyone goes to the king's inner court without being summoned, there is only one law that states that he shall be put to death, and that the king shall hold out the golden scepter to him, and he shall live. Esther says that it has already been thirty days since she was summoned to go to the king.
2) 모르드개가 이때를 위한 하나님의 포석일 수 있다고 말한 사건을 무엇입니까(14절)? 2) What event did Mordecai say could be God’s plan for this time (v. 14)?
14 이 때에 네가 만일 잠잠하여 말이 없으면 유다인은 다른 데로 말미암아 놓임과 구원을 얻으려니와 너와 네 아버지 집은 멸망하리라 네가 왕후의 자리를 얻은 것이 이 때를 위함이 아닌지 누가 알겠느냐 하니
14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. And who knows but that you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"
에스더가 죽음을 무릅쓰고 왕 앞에 나아가서 자기 민족을 구하는 일
The event that Esther risked her life to go before the king and save her people.
3) 에스더는 무엇을 결단합니까(16절)? 3) What does Esther decide to do (verse 16)?
16 당신은 가서 수산에 있는 유다인을 다 모으고 나를 위하여 금식하되 밤낮 삼 일을 먹지도 말고 마시지도 마소서 나도 나의 시녀와 더불어 이렇게 금식한 후에 규례를 어기고 왕에게 나아가리니 죽으면 죽으리이다 하니라
16 Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast likewise; and so I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.”
에스더는 금식한 후에 규례를 어기고 왕에게 나아가리니 죽으면 죽으리이다 합니다.
Esther said, "After fasting I will go to the king, which is against the custom; and if I perish, I perish."
<나눔 2> 에스더는 동족에게 비극이 닥칠 것을 안 후에도 왕에게 나아가는 것을 두려워합니다. 왕의 총애를 받지 못하는 상황에서 자칫 죽을 수도 있기 때문입니다.
<Sharing 2> Even after Esther learned that tragedy would befall her people, she was afraid to approach the king. She was afraid that she might die if she did not receive the king's favor. 반면 모르드개는 이 순간을 위해 에스더가 왕후의 자리를 얻은 것이리라 믿습니다. Mordecai, on the other hand, believes that Esther has obtained the position of queen for this moment. 무엇이 옳은 일인지 알면서도 여러 염려 때문에 주저한 적이 있다면 나눠 봅시다. If you've ever hesitated to do something you knew was right because of concerns, share them.
학생들에게 전기 기타를 가르쳐 주려고 했는데 전기 합선 사고의 위험 때문에 그만 둔 일이 있습니다.
We once tried to teach electric guitar to students, but stopped because of the risk of electrical short-circuiting.
<나눔 3> 에스더는 모르드개의 말대로 왕께 나아가기로 결단합니다. 두렵지 않아서나 아니라, 두려운 마음을 기도와 근신을 통해 이겨냈기 때문입니다.
<Sharing 3> Esther decides to go to the king as Mordecai says. It is not because she is not afraid, but because she has overcome her fear through prayer and diligence.
지금 믿음으로 결단해야 할 일은 무엇인지 서로 이야기하고, 두려운 마음을 떨치고 실천할 수 있도록 서로를 위해 기도합시다.
Let us talk to each other about what we need to decide in faith now, and let us pray for each other so that we can shake off our fears and put them into practice.
두 아들이 두려운 마음을 떨치고 직장과 아르바이트 구하기 그리고 주님의 일에 동역하기
The two sons shook off their fears and found jobs and part-time jobs and joined in the Lord's work.
□함께 기도드려요 Let's pray together
주님, 다른 이들의 아픔을 외면하지 않는 긍휼과 인애(仁愛)의 마음을 품게 하소서!
Lord, help us to have a heart of compassion and love that does not turn away from the pain of others!
파키스탄과 인도, 미얀마와 우크라이나 등 온 열방의 전쟁과 가난 그리고 질병 가운데 있는 이들의 회복을 베푸소서!
May all nations, including Pakistan, India, Myanmar, and Ukraine, heal those who are suffering from war, poverty, and disease!
