Luke 8:26-39
Jesus goes to Gerasera and restores the character and life of a man who was possessed by demons and was living in misery. But the residents there do not welcome Jesus.
Jesus and his disciples go to the Gerasene region across from Galilee. When Jesus got out of the boat, a demon-possessed man came out as if he had been waiting for him, fell on his face and begged him not to torment him. He was possessed by evil spirits and lived naked in the tomb. The villagers bound him with chains and shackles, but it was no use. This is because the ghosts that entered him were numerous and strong, befitting the name ‘Army’.
Jesus commands them to ‘come out,’ but the demons do not go away and beg to be let into the herd of pigs. When Jesus gives permission, the demons enter the herd of pigs and drown them in the lake, killing them. The people who heard the rumor and ran to see that the young man had regained his senses were afraid and asked Jesus to leave. They could have used fear as an opportunity to believe, but they foolishly choose to reject Jesus.
The grave, the dwelling place of a demon-possessed person, was a prison with no exit, and he was like a death row inmate with no hope. The iron shackles that the villagers had put on him became another shackles, constricting him. Jesus repaired his broken life and restored human dignity. The Lord will once and for all remove all the chains of addiction and bondage that bind us.
Let us pray together for the complete recovery of those who are addicted to alcohol, money, laziness, drugs, drama, games, and worldly things.
God, take away the bonds that bind us and let us enjoy true freedom in the Lord!
