Wrongful Zeal
Wrongful Zeal
Romans 9:30-10:4
Gentiles who did not follow (pursue) righteousness obtained righteousness, but Israel, who did (pursue) righteousness, did not attain it. It is because Israel rejected God's way to righteousness by believing in Jesus Christ and relied on their own incompetent works. Because of this stubbornness, Jesus Christ of salvation became a stumbling block to Israel. However, the righteousness that Israel sought in the law can only be found in Jesus Christ. Because Jesus Christ fulfilled all the law and became righteousness for those who believe.
Through Jesus Christ, the end of the law, God accomplished righteousness that could not be achieved through the law. The only thing we can rely on is the “righteousness of God” that saves sinners through faith in Jesus Christ. The power of the law and obedience will only work within the “righteousness of God”.
More important than our zeal is the direction of our zeal. The Israelites’ zeal was directed towards their own satisfaction with no concern for God’s will and purpose. It is important for us to labour earnestly, but it us more important for us to examine whether our labour is pleasing to God. What is our zeal directed towards?
God, thank You for being the righteousness for us who believe in Jesus Christ, the end of the law. Let us be zealous in the direction that pleases You!
